Patents, copyrights and licenses, among other forms of knowledge protection are a key process in the management of R&D. Companies and institutions whose activity generates knowledge must take measures and formulas to protect legal and strategic intellectual property results from its research activities. Without this protection, in most cases, and innovative research efforts will not be profitable or be able to recover their investments.

In any organization, to adopt Intellectual and Industrial Protection measures, such as patents, involves systematically identifying innovations and knowledge that needs to be protect, select and combined with the most appropriate protection mechanisms in each case: legal, internal control and business strategies.

For this, the main agencies and management information are the intellectual property institutions in each country. The main registration offices in Latin America, are: INPI (Argentina), SENAPI (Bolivia), INPI (Brazil), INAPI (Chile), OEPM (Spain), IMPI (Mexico), INPI (Portugal) among others.

The growth in the amount of information available on Internet has led to the development of  tools that allow us to automate the processing of large amounts of information in order to find information of interest. These tools use bibliometric and scentometric techniques that combine indexing and statistical analysis techniques. The tools perform the searches, process and analyse technical, economic and commercial information from free internet sources, as well as from on-line bibliographic and commercial databases.
