Mechanisms of protection

The intellectual property rights include several legal procedures to be formalized in order to protect research and knowledge results.

Intellectual Property is acquired by the simple creation of the work, while the Industrial Property requires completion of a record. All forms of protection are territorial in nature. Each State has its own validity and covers the territory for which it is granted. For example, a Spanish patent protects the invention bur is not subject to the same in another country. The IPR-Helpdesk is a virtual service and free advice on the protection and exploitation of knowledge. It is funded by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme for R&D.
